Although Windows will usually be activated automatically when you install it, sometimes you have to enable it manually. Activating Windows will certify that the copy of Windows is only used on your computer’s hardware so this can help combat piracy.

If you have just purchased a laptop, or you cannot connect to the internet after installing Windows, you may need to activate a copy of Windows manually.
Click Start. Right-click Computer and then click Properties. The System Properties window will open.
This can also be done by pressing the Win + Pause button.
Click the “Activate Windows Now” link at the bottom of the window. Windows will try to detect an active internet connection. If a connection is detected, the “Activate Windows online now” option will appear, and you can choose it. If it still doesn’t look, make sure that you are really connected to the Internet.
Enter the Windows 7 product key when prompted. Enter a code containing 25 compelling characters so that your copy of Windows can be activated. The Windows product key can be on the bottom of the laptop, on the back of the computer case, in a DVD disc container Windows 7, or in your Windows 7 manual.
If you get Windows from the internet, you will receive a product key via email (confirmation).
If your product key remains missing, you must purchase a new product key.
Click.Next to activate your copy of Windows. The activation process can take several minutes. After the process is complete, a confirmation message will appear in the activation window. To ensure that your Windows is active, open System Properties again (by right-clicking Computer and then selecting Properties). At the bottom of the window a message that says “Windows is activated” will appear.
